Portraits of Injustice/Voices of Victims of Repression

Independent (5/17): Chelsea Manning released from Fort Leavenworth prison after serving seven years of 35-year sentence
“The conditions in my cell were far beyond what is normally associated with solitary confinement. I needed permission to do anything in my cell. I was not allowed to move around the cell to exercise. I was not allowed to sit down with my back against the wall,” said a testimony last year. Amnesty International, which is among the groups campaigning for Ms Manning’s release, called for protections to be put in place to ensure other whistleblowers are “never again subjected to excessive and cruel treatment”.

The Huffington Post (5/16): Anti-Muslim Extremist Is Training Police In Arizona
An anti-Muslim bigot and conspiracy theorist is being paid thousands of dollars in public funds this week to train Arizona law enforcement officers about the “jihadi” threat in the U.S., despite calls for the training to be canceled. The Mesa Police Department is hosting John Guandolo ― a disgraced former FBI agent with deep ties to anti-Muslim hate groups ― at a police facility for a three-day seminar titled, “Understanding and Investigating the Jihadi Network.

Alternet (5/15): CIA Documents Expose the Failed Torture Methods Used on Guantanamo’s Most Famous Detainee
This was a summary of CIA documents obtained by AlterNet’s Grayzone Project. The records were originally obtained by Zubaydah’s defense team through the discovery proces. The vast majority of the documents have not been available to the public prior to this story. Among the most shocking revelations in the files is the fact that the CIA engaged in torture even before it received legal authorization from the Bush administration’s infamous “Torture Memos,” which were signed on Aug. 1, 2002.

Human Rights Campaign (5/16): Trump’s Proposing a Back Door Muslim Ban—Here’s How You Can Help Stop It
The State Department, which overseas applicants for U.S. visas, has proposed new procedures and guidance aimed at certain applicants it considers a “threat to national security.” While it does not explicitly mention Muslims or specific countries, it is not hard to imagine who President Trump would label a “threat to national security.” You can show your support for Muslims and people from predominantly Muslim countries by submitting a public comment directly to the Office of Management and Budget.

Editorials/Opinions

Rewire (5/17): Trump’s Exposure of Classified Information Introduces New Wrinkle Into Muslim Ban Challenges
News has emerged that Trump himself has created a national security crisis by giving classified information to the Russians. That information appears to be about radical Islamic threats to the United States. That national security threat posed the initial justification for Trump’s ban. In theory, wouldn’t Trump’s actions here completely undercut that the ban was in any way grounded in national security threats—given that the president alone has created a national security crisis apparently related to claims of terror plots that no ban could address?

New York Magazine (5/17): Trump Nominates Actual Fascist David Clarke for Department of Homeland Security
Clarke’s mind is organized around a worship of the virtues of physical force, combined with a seething intolerance for democratic dissent. In his book, Clarke proposes that the Department of Homeland Security — the department that he has been nominated to serve — assume police-state powers to round up internal enemies. “I suggest that our commander in chief ought to utilize Article I, Section 9 and take all of these individuals that are suspected, these ones on the internet spewing jihadi rhetoric … to scoop them up, charge them with treason and, under habeas corpus, detain them indefinitely at Gitmo,” he writes.
