StepFeed 2/3): Canada shows the world what solidarity with Muslims should look like [Article & Videos: 5 min. 21 sec.,  17 min. 52 sec.]
Canadians have just shown the world what solidarity with Muslims looks like in a big way. Thousands of Canadians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec politicians, paid their respects on Thursday to three of the six men killed by a white supremacist terrorist while they prayed in a mosque in Quebec City on Sunday.

MPR News (2/2): Minnesota Somali nonprofit declines $500,000 federal grant [Article & Audio: 4 min. 48 sec.]
A prominent nonprofit serving Somali-American youth has refused a $500,000 grant from the federal Department of Homeland Security in light of President Trump’s refugee and travel restrictions. Ka Joog was one of two Minnesota groups that had received funding in the latest round of the nation’s Countering Violent Extremism program, known as CVE. The announcement came out just hours after Reuters reported that Trump would focus CVE solely on preventing radical Islam and would no longer target groups such as white supremacist who have carried out bombings and shootings across the country.

Democracy Now! (2/6): Seattle Lawyer Challenging Trump’s Muslim Ban: “The Outpouring of Support is Unprecedented” [Video: 17 min.]
The Department of Homeland Security said it had “suspended any and all actions” related to the travel ban. Among those who were able to travel back to the U.S. was a 12-year-old Yemeni daughter who was able to reunite with her family on Sunday.

Statesman Journal (2/2): Oregon Gov. Kate Brown orders state to not participate in a Muslim registry
Brown also called upon Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum to take legal action opposing the federal government’s anti-immigration measures. Brown’s order also broadens a 30-year-old state statute that prohibits law enforcement agencies from treating undocumented Oregonians as criminals to include all state agencies. And it re-emphasizes that state agencies must not discriminate on the basis of immigration status.

Dissent News Wire (2/3): Hirono Introduces Resolution to Honor Fred Korematsu, Denounce Trump Targeting of Muslim & Minority Communities
Senator Mazie K. Hirono has introduced a resolution honoring Fred Korematsu, who challenged the internment of Japanese Americans, for his work and advocacy of the civil rights and liberties of all people, and denouncing President Donald Trump’s executive order establishing a Muslim ban. BORDC/DDF applauds Senator Hirono and supports the resolution.

Islamophobia and Civil Rights

Aljazeera (2/1): ‘Witch hunt’ fears as US may outlaw Muslim Brotherhood
US civil liberties groups have slammed plans by members of Congress to proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the legislation, tabled by Republican senators Ted Cruz and Mario Diaz-Balart and supported by the Trump administration, could lead to a “witch hunt”. The bill, titled the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act, was submitted in January shortly before President Donald Trump took power. It accuses the group of plotting a “grand jihad” to destroy Western civilisation from within.

Government Policies Under Scrutiny

The Washington Post (2/6): Former top diplomats, tech giants blast immigration order as court showdown looms
Fresh challenges to President Trump’s court-frozen immigration order took shape Monday with two former secretaries of state claiming the White House was undermining national security and nearly 100 Silicon Valley tech companies arguing it will keep the best minds from coming to America. The powerful new voices were added with another legal showdown coming as early as Monday. The suspension of the order, meanwhile, has allowed those previously banned more time to try to reach the United States. A decision Sunday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit preserved a lower judge’s order to temporarily halt the ban.

Editorials/Opinions

Dean Obeidallah in Huffington Post (2/2): Trump’s Disregard For Islamophobic Hate Crimes Shows He Cares Little About Muslim American Lives
While Trump refuses to acknowledge the threat of white supremacists in America, we must in order to keep people of color safe. Let me be blunt: attacks like Quebec could very likely happen in the United States in the near future given the recent plots by white supremacists to kill Muslim Americans. While I would imagine many Americans have not heard about these terror plots since our media barely covers them, it’s fair to assume that the president of the United States and his team are aware of them. Despite these hate crimes and terrorist plots to kill Muslim Americans (and others) by right-wing extremists, Trump is now reportedly on the verge of altering a federal program that sought to counter the threats of all forms of extremism ― including white supremacism ― to have it solely focus on Islamic extremists. The dangerous problem with this is twofold: first it furthers the wildly incorrect notion that only Muslims are terrorists. And second it could make it easier for white supremacists to organize, plot and possibly carry out terror attacks against people of color, Muslims or even Jews.

Sue Udry in Dissent NewsWIre (2/3): Before Fake Bowling Green Massacre, There Was Fake Bowling Green Terror Plot Created by FBI
You heard about the fake “Bowling Green Massacre” from Trump advisor Kelleyanne Conway. When she was challenged about the nonexistent massacre, she pointed to a supposed terrorist plot, which was about as fake as her massacre. What happened in Bowling Green in 2010-2011 was one of a long string of FBI sting operations designed to lure Muslims into fake terror plots created, led, and facilitated by the FBI.

Jalal Baig in Alternet (2/5): Steve Bannon’s War with Islam: Trump May Not Even Understand His Adviser’s Apocalyptic Vision
There seems to be considerable urgency right now to enshrine Donald Trump’s Islamophobia into law. Talk of an immigration ban, a Muslim registry and even internment camps once sounded like the machinations of a spray-tanned salesman looking to indulge the electorate’s need for a good villain narrative. Amid an atmosphere of overwhelming chaos, the early days of Trump’s reign have made clear, however, that Islam is Public Enemy No. 1 and serves as the centerpiece of Steve Bannon’s ethno-nationalist agenda.
