Washington, D.C.| www.civilfreedoms.org | January 26, 2017-The National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms is outraged by the news that President Trump will be signing an Executive Order that will not only ban Muslim immigrants from six Muslim majority countries, but which will also cede refugee intake into the United States for at least 120 days.
The National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms believes that rather than implementing policies to protect the United States, that these measures are instead designed to fundamentally target Muslims and others racialized as Muslims.
Commenting on the impending Executive Order banning immigrants and refugees, Dr. Maha Hilal, Executive Director of the National Coalition stated that, “it is unfortunate that President Trump is beginning his term as President by instituting measures that are fundamentally racist, xenophobic, and Islamophobic at their core. While this is not a deviation from over a decade of targeted policies towards Muslims under the War on Terror, the speed at which Trump is putting such changes into effect, underscores just how deeply Islamophobia has been institutionalized in the course of the War on Terror. “
The National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms recognizes that these new measures aimed at targeting immigrants and refugees are likely to set the stage for and justify other repressive measures that will disproportionately impact Muslims. As an organization that works to support prisoners and families impacted by the policies of the War on Terror, we are fully committed to protecting those who are uniquely vulnerable to being targeted. Further, the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms stands ready to challenge any further measures which are fundamentally rooted in systems of oppression and the utilization of state violence.
