Nida Abubaker, Daughter of Shukri Abubaker of the Holy Land Five Case

Dear NCPCF Friends and Supporters,

My name is Nida Abubaker and in 2008, my father Shukri Abubaker was convicted on material support for terrorism charges and was sentenced to 65 years in prison.  Despite the U.S. government’s claim that my father’s charity, the Holy Land Foundation, was supporting Hamas, his only real crime was supporting Palestinian widows and children, a population that has been criminalized and increasingly so under the War on Terror.

Life without my father has been difficult and I know my family is not alone in experiencing the loss of a loved one in the War on Terror.  It is not always easy to talk about my family’s story, but I do it knowing that my father is innocent and believing that one day, he will be free.

The National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms has supported my family throughout the years through the organizing of their families’ conferences and the provision of platforms through which we can share our stories.  Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to speak at an event in New York City in order to uplift my father’s story and raise awareness of the consequences that many Muslims have faced in the course of the War on Terror.  I am so grateful to have received the support of the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms, one of the only organizations in the United States that supports Muslim political prisoners and their families.

I’m sharing my story in the hopes that you will help the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms continue their work in the coming year to support those of us who have been the most impacted by post 9/11 counterterrorism policies.  With Islamophobia on the rise and the election of a President who has vowed to implement anti-Muslim policies, we need the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms more than ever.  Your gift today will help the organization fight back against problematic policies, while working to center the stories of impacted families.

As we near the end of 2016 and gear up towards 2017, a year that will be filled with much uncertainty in the realm of civil and human civil rights, I urge you to be generous with your donations to support the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms.  Your gift of $25, $50, $100, or more will really help this great organization start strong in the new year.  Will you help the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms in their fight to protect our civil freedoms?  I hope so.

Nida Abubaker
